Step Into Digital: A free pathway into a range IT careers

Step Into Digital latest graduates

Telford College is launching another free digital skills training course in September, with the help of one of the town’s biggest employers.

The four-week Step Into Digital work programme has been designed with the help of Capgemini, and is aimed at people looking to begin a technology career.

It is primarily targeted at people aged 19 and over who are currently unemployed, and includes an exclusive work placement opportunity at Capgemini’s offices in Telford.

“This is perfect for people looking to take their first steps into the digital sector, who want to learn more about software applications in the workplace,” said Beckie Bosworth, Telford College’s director of apprenticeships and employer engagement.

Students who have just completed this summer’s programme have described it as a valuable stepping stone towards an IT career.

Travis Butterfield, from Priorslee in Telford, said he had signed up for the course because he had been trying to get into software development for some time. “This was a chance to develop myself, and give me better opportunities,” he said.

“I’ve learned how to write a better CV, and it was really valuable to be able to spend time at the Capgemini offices, getting an insight to what goes on there, the culture, the ethos, and the people.”

Steve Appleton, from Market Drayton, added: “I was told about this by the job centre, and am glad to have taken part.

“I have been into computers since I was old enough to hold a mouse. I’ve learned a lot, meeting new people and improving my skills – and I now have a proper target to aim for.”

Vicky Dabbs, Telford College employability lecturer, said: “Over four dynamic weeks, these students each brought unique perspectives and a shared enthusiasm for technology.

“From local talent to those traveling from further afield, they explored the world of tech through a blend of industry-recognised qualifications, employability skills, and an exclusive work experience placement with Capgemini.

“Working as a team, they conducted interviews with IT students, lecturers, and professionals, and explored cutting-edge technologies including VR, 3D printing, and AI.

“Their final presentation impressed Capgemini staff, showcasing not only their research and creativity but also their growing confidence and professionalism. Their journey has deepened their ambition to shape the future of the digital world.

The idea for the Step Into Digital programme came out of Telford College’s Digital Employer Skills Hub, where college staff work with local employers to help meet their skills needs.

The course has been created by the college with assistance from officials at Capgemini, and involves a week of work placement. Candidates also get chance to participate in mock interview and feedback sessions.

Beckie Bosworth added: “Capgemini deliver sessions on issues such as cyber security and explain some of the career opportunities currently on offer in the sector.

“And everyone who completes the programme will also receive a nationally recognised level one extended certificate in employability and level two customer service qualification.”
